## Getting Paid for Your Words

Writing is one thing. Getting paid for it is another. Here are common invoicing practices used by freelance writers.

### Per-Word vs. Flat Rate

Many freelance writers bill per word (for example, **$0.015/word**) and include the exact word count as a line item on the invoice. For repeat clients, flat per-article rates are often simpler—just make sure the agreed scope is clearly noted on the invoice.

### Spell Out the Rights

Usage rights should be clearly specified on the invoice. **First Serial Rights** typically allow one-time publication, while **Work for Hire** transfers full ownership. If rights aren't stated, clients often assume full ownership by default.
